Big Belly Waste Bin Wrap
For the City of Kirkland, Washington.
Rebecca Fletcher, Asha Thomas, Sage Abplanalp
Goal
Replace and re-skin several Big Belly compactors throughout the city of Kirkland to offer an updated and refreshed look.
Discovery
Our team organized our discovery by creating a KWHL table to guide our research.
Personas
After completing our secondary research which included user interviews, we established 3 different personas to better guide the course of the project.
Define
Our team decided to move forward with a nature-based theme that focused on the native flora and fauna that call the city of Kirkland home. To elevate the project we also decided to include an EPUB accessed by a QR code to further community engagement and awareness of the native species.
*Sage was tasked with creating the wrap design, and Rebecca and Asha completed the EPUB together.
Ideate
We started our ideation by sketching and creating mood boards to efficiently establish the style of the wrap and flow of the EPUB.

Prototype
Once we determined the style and basic structures of our wrap and EPUB we began building the wireframes followed by the prototypes.
Bin concept by Sage Abplanalp
We originally planned on using a flat art style for both the bin wrap and the EPUB. However, after showing these concepts to our stakeholders, we received a much more enthusiastic response to the sketched art. This resulted in a slight stylistic pivot towards a sketched watercolor style.
Final bin wrap
Our final concept approved by the city of Kirkland.
Final EPUB
In addition to the bin wrap, we created an interactive EPUB that would be accessed by a QR code located on the wraps. The purpose of the EPUB was to further educate residents on the native flora and fauna in the city of Kirkland and encourage further preservation of the local environment by properly disposing of waste.
